August is a busy time of year, especially as events and vacation plans continue to change, and families look ahead to a distinctly different new school year. Here are a few options to consider if you’re looking to hang out around town at some local events, volunteer, or get ready for the school year. It’s a good idea to confirm each event’s status before attending, as conditions evolve rapidly.

Public Art Walk

San Jose

Saturday, August 6, 2021, San Jose’s Art Walk is back. Check out downtown’s SoFA District, where a collection of galleries, businesses, and museums will be open to the public for self-guided tours from 5PM to 9PM. Can’t make it this weekend? Palo Alto Team Bike Ride

Palo Alto

Spend this weekend exploring some of Palo Alto’s existing bike paths, and check out some of the newly planned biking improvements. The ride will begin on August 8 at 10AM at the Cal Avenue Caltrain station. More details are available here.

Outdoor Farmers Market Yoga

Every Saturday stop by the Santa Clara Farmers Market for a relaxing workout. Social distancing protocols will be followed, and tickets will be limited, so make sure to reserve your spot! Classes will be offered from 8:30AM-9:30AM and 10AM-11AM. You can purchase tickets here.

Southridge Church Backpack Giveaway

San Jose

Southridge Church is supporting students in their return to school. They will be providing backpacks filled with supplies for students in grades K-12 on Sunday, August 15, 2021 from 10:30AM-1:30PM. Supplies are limited and on a first-come, first-serve basis. You can register a student for the Backpack Drive here.

Alum Rock Trail Crew

San Jose

Every second Saturday of the month, the Alum Rock Trail Crew invites you to join them on a hike, where the crew will learn all about trail restoration work. The crew starts work at 9AM. Make sure to bring a filled out Volunteer Service Agreement.

Fine Art in the Park

Los Altos

The Rotary Club of Los Altos is hosting their annual open-air art show this August 14 and 15 at Lincoln Park. All proceeds from the charity event will go to emergency help for COVID-19 victims, local scholarships, and supporting sustainable local and international projects.
