The Fremont Union High School District announced on its website Sept. 19 that 121 of its students were named National Merit Scholarship 2019 semifinalists. Students hail from the District’s five high schools: Cupertino, Fremont, Homestead, Lynbrook and Monta Vista high schools.
In total, approximately 16,000 semifinalists were selected across the country. They were chosen based on Preliminary SAT (PSAT) scores, which is taken by roughly 1.6 million high school students across in the nation, according to the District.
Semifinalists will have the opportunity to compete for 7,500 National Merit Scholarships in spring 2019. The program is “an academic competition for recognition and scholarships that began in 1955,” according to the program website.
