City of Los Altos Recognized for Local Climate Policy Leadership

The City of Los Altos received four awards from the Institute for Local Government’s (ILG) Beacon Program for achieving significant and voluntary reductions in greenhouse gas output during 2015-2018.  The awards were received in August 2022 and officially presented to the City’s Environmental Commission during a City Council meeting earlier this year.

According to a press release issued by the City of Los Altos, the City received Platinum-level awards “for Agency Greenhouse Gas Reductions and for Community Greenhouse Gas Reductions, both at the 40% reduction level, and for Agency Natural Gas Savings at the 30% savings level.”  The City also received a silver-level award for “Sustainability Best Practices.”

The City Council approved a Climate Action and Adaptation Plan 2022 last March to build upon this success.

As South Bay municipalities seek to advance climate-related policies at the local level, Los Altos’ recognition may serve as a blueprint for how to effectively implement these programs.
