Santa Clara volunteers needed for 2022 biennial homeless census

The City of Santa Clara is in need of volunteers for the 2022 Point-in-Time Count for all populations of people experiencing homelessness. The Count was rescheduled due to COVID concerns and will take place Wednesday Feb. 23 and Thursday Feb. 24 from 5 a.m. to 10 a.m.

The biennial homeless census is a requirement to receive federal homeless assistance funds and provides important data used to better understand homelessness on a local level.

In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, Count organizers are working to ensure maximum safety for all participants. Safety updates include virtual trainings, limited volunteer team sizes, mandatory health screening questionnaires, and more.

Volunteers will be asked to work in teams of 2-4 people and are expected to walk or drive their assigned route from approximately 5 a.m. to 10 a.m. Volunteers are also expected to have charged cells phones and be able to walk 2-3 miles if necessary—though not all routes require walking—and at least one team member needs a smart phone capable of downloading a surveying app.

If you plan to volunteer with a team, only one person—the team captain—needs to fill out the registration form on behalf of the team. Additional teams will be pre-assigned in advance of the Count to help minimize the need to gather.
