San Jose just implemented public Wi-Fi at a variety of outdoor spots throughout the downtown area.

Cambium Networks’ 60 GHz millimeter wave fixed wireless technology provides wireless access via network infrastructure installed on streetlights, traffic lights, and buildings. The network design “enables large numbers of network users to enjoy bandwidth-intensive services such as streaming video, video conferencing, social media, audio streaming, voice calling and more,” according to Cambium Networks’ announcement.

“The pandemic has shown how important core connectivity is to education, health, and work,” said the Interim Deputy City Manager and Director of the Office of Civic Innovation and Digital Strategy Dolan Beckel. “San Jose’s pandemic recovery efforts include Wi-Fi for our small businesses downtown, as well as digital equity access for our families.”

By using city-owned assets as Wi-Fi access points, the City is able to “enable gigabit capacity at a fraction of the cost of deploying fiber to these locations,” Cambium Networks stated.

“We are proud to collaborate with the City of San Jose and system integrators to rapidly deliver connectivity to local communities,” said Cambium Networks president and CEO Atul Bhatnagar.
