Pack A Back sees soaring demand in advance of distribution event

The annual Pack A Back program, run by Sacred Heart Community Service, is preparing for its distribution event starting Friday.

Organizers say that demand is skyrocketing for the free backpacks and supplies, as COVID-19 economic hardship hits home.

“This year, Sacred Heart has registered more than 3,800 children to receive free backpacks and school supplies – 500 more than last year,” organizers said Monday.

Sacred Heart is putting out fundraising calls, seeking nearly $100k for their expanded efforts. For those unable to support in financial ways, volunteers are also needed.

Unlike past years, distribution is now taking place over four days – August 7, 10, 11, and 12. Distribution for pre-registered families runs from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on those days. Contact-free home delivery is also set to get underway.

“Local students and their families need help to start the new school year with hope and opportunity, because learning never stops,” the organization said.
