Cupertino student wins prestigious ‘young scientist’ award

A local middle school student has won California’s ‘Young Scientist’ challenge, a premier science competition.

Audrey Luu, a student at Lawson Middle School in Cupertino bested the competition, sponsored by 3M and Discovery Education.

“The 2020 finalists and state merit winners prove once again that young minds combine STEM skills with imagination and creativity to identify and solve a real-world problem using science,” said Denise Rutherford of 3M.

Luu won for her project called “FISH in a Jar.”

Winners were selected for their innovations and their presentations. Entrants in grades 5-8 identified everyday problems and submitted short videos on how to solve them. Judges from 3M and a number of scientific fields evaluated the applications.

“This year’s State Merit Winners demonstrate exceptional creativity and scientific passion in the pursuit of bettering the world,” said Lori McFarling, President of Corporate & Community Partnerships, Discovery Education.

This was the 13th year of the challenge.
