Groundbreaking for senior housing project in Cupertino set for April 19The Veranda groundbreaking will take place on April 19.

A groundbreaking ceremony is set to be held on Thursday, April 19 for a new senior affordable housing development at the corner of Stevens Creek Boulevard and S. Tantou Avenue in Cupertino.

The Veranda is a partnership between the City and Charities Housing that will feature 19 units, with 18 being age-restricted for extremely-low income seniors and very-low income seniors.

The groundbreaking event at the site, located at 19160 Stevens Creek Blvd. — directly across the street from the new Main Street Cupertino, which has retail stores and restaurants — will run from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Construction is expected to last through March 2019, with lease marketing expected to begin at the end of this year.

The three-story apartment building will have roughly 350-square foot studio units that have complete kitchens, ADA accessible bathrooms and floors serviced by an elevator, according to the plans. All second and third floor units have private balconies while the first-floor units have ground-floor patios. The property will also feature a common laundry room, public restroom and community lounge along with shared open space, including three separate patios on the east side of the building devoted to activities such as gardening, reading or dining, and a citrus garden with fruit trees. Parking for staff, residents and visitors will be on site.
