When reaching the winning city Spelling Bee round, Sanjay Anand’s abilities did not “deteriorate”.
Anand won the 4th-5th grade bracket of the City of Cupertino’s first spelling bee this past Saturday after spelling “deteriorate” correctly.
In the 1st through 3rd grade bracket, equally impressive Ananya Kalapatapu won by correctly spelling the word “extravaganza”.
The Cupertino Spelling Bee was organized by Cupertino Recreation and Community Services for students in grades 1-5. The event is an enrichment activity but does not qualify winners for national spelling competitions.
Nevertheless, its very first Spelling Bee at the Quinlan Community Center sold out.
It wasn’t just fun for families, it was for a good cause, as spectators were required to pay a $5 fee or bring a can of donated food for West Valley Community Services.
